Grids and zones

Geography - the study of where things are found on Earth's surface and the reasons for the locations Common questions: where are people and activities found on the Earth? why are they found there? Maps - a two dimensional or flat-scale model of the Earth's surface (or portion of it) the art and science of map making is called cartography    *Eratosthenes (195 BC) 2 purposes - reference to absolute and relative location                    a communications tool to describe human activities and physical features Absolute - position as expressed in degrees, minutes, minutes, and seconds of latitude and longitude Relative - the regional position or situation of a place relative to the position of other places Latitude- geographic coordinate that specifies the north/south position of a point on the Earth's surface - measured by imaginary lines             Arctic Circle: 66 °   34' (66.57 °) N Tropic Of Cancer: 23 ° 26' (23.43 °) N Equator: (

Situations

In class yesterday we learned about sites and how they are what geographers use to describe the location by the physical character of the place. But today we learned about a situation. A situation is a valuable way to indicate location for two reasons: 1.        Situation helps us to find an unfamiliar place by comparing its location with a familiar one 2.        Situation helps us understand the importance of a location… for example: a.        Some places are important because they are accessible to other important location During class you asked one of us where Bel air was. You kept asking and asking til someone said Baltimore, because everyone knows where it is. This is a great example of situation. This is because if someone asked where Bel Air was and they weren't from around here they wouldn't know where is was unless they were told a familiar place near by. The person wouldn't know where Bel Air or Harford County is so they would have to be told how far aw

Sites

This blog may seem bad because I'm very bad at explaining what we learned in class today but I understand it. These are some of the notes I took: KEY QUESTION : How do geographers describe where things are?                                            -Geographers can describe the location by site, which is the physical                                                       character of a place (climate, water sources, topography, soil vegetation,                                               latitude, and elevation) Humans have the ability to modify the characteristics of a site The southern portion of NYC Manhattan Island is twice as large today as it was in 1626 So what I learned in class today was that there is an upside and a down side to constructing a building of work/home in the city. The upsides are: Unemployed people looking for jobs can find a job there  If the land that is being constructed on for an apartment building was corn fields owned by a farmer and

Test #1 review

Today we went over our first test. I am soooooo happy with the grade I got on it. I though I was going to get an okay grade on it but I was very happy and surprised when I saw that I got a 95%. The only question I did not get right was 'name two words that have the same origin of polis'. I put Athens and Sparta since they were political city-states but I guess not. I also got a 19/20 on the second essay question because I said that religion is a choice but I guess it really wasn't that much of a choice back then. I didn't answer the bonus question because I didn't know it, I only knew that is started with a D. I didn't study it because I thought that wouldn't be on the test, which was a mistake. I think I was pretty prepared for the test. I studied a pretty good amount, enough to prepare myself for the test at least. I studied a little bit one night then studied a little more and went over what I studied the night before so I could be ready the next day for

Peter's map vs Mercator map

Image
Mercator Map -  a map projection of which the meridians are usually drawn parallel to each other and the parallels of latitude are straight lines whose distance from each other increases with their distance from the equator presented by the Flemish geographer and cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569  It became the standard map projection for navigation because of its unique property of representing any course of constant bearing as a straight segment Misconceptions:  Alaska is nearly as large as the U.S. Greenland is about the same size as Africa Europe is only a bit larger than South America (not including Russia) In reality:  Alaska can fit inside the U.S. about three times Greenland can fit inside Africa about 14 times South America nearly doubles Europe's land mass    Peter's Map -  maps all areas so that they have the correct sizes relative to each other what we perceive as land mass in the "South" is nearly twice as big as th

Different maps

So today in class we learned about different types of maps and the differences between them. You hung three maps on the board and we had to write down things that made them different and unique. Map A was a map of the United States. This map had highways, transportation and number routes, cities, and capitals. This map would be mostly used for traveling across the country on a road trip for example. Map B was a Peter's map. This showed a map of the whole world but didn't have the correct sizes of some countries. It emphasized specific countries such as North and South America. Map C was a Mercator map. This means it is a closer and more accurate map unlike Peter's map. It is also a better representation of the realistic sizes of the countries and continents. At the end of class we watched a rather weird episode of a boring t.v. show. The show talked about how the Mercator map was incorrect and should be used more often than Peter's map.
We had a test today about A Message to Garcia, Socrates, and Athenian democracy. I think I did pretty good on it, I might have gotten a 100% but I'm not sure it's in your hands. I didn't know the bonus question but I knew it started with a D but it's okay cause I feel really good about the rest of the quiz. I think my essay question answers were pretty good too. I think that I put in my best effort and put in all the information I knew about the topic question. I also think that mine were a good length, they weren't as long as some of the over achiever in the class. My essays that I type for English are probably my best ones. But I do feel good about the essay questions from today's quiz. I think I did really good on this test and am ready for any other ones.

quiz on athenian democracy, socrates, and a message to Garcia

an idiot in Athenian democracy was someone who was characterized by self-contentedness and concerned almost exclusively with private as to opposed to public-affairs in Athenian democracy, idiots were born and citizens were made through education declining to take part in public life, such as democratic government of the polis (city state) was considered dishonorable the unexamined life is not worth living -Socrates In class today, we talked about the quiz we are having tomorrow. I think there are going to be questions about the main people and events that occurred in the time periods we studied. I think there are also going to be questions about the book Elbert Hubbard wrote like how many languages it was written in and the amount of copies were sold. I think the bonus question is going to have something to do with Elbert Hubbard. I also think the fill in the blank answers are going to just be names and years.

508 BC terms

agora -  a public open space used for assemblies and markets. The literal meaning of the word is "gathering place" or "assembly". The agora was the center of the athletic, artistic, spiritual and political life in the city. Early in Greek history  free-born citizens would gather in the agora for military duty or to hear statements of the ruling king or council. Later, the agora also served as a marketplace, where merchants kept stalls or shops to sell their goods. This attracted artisans who built workshops nearby.  polis-  a city state in ancient Greece, especially as considered in its ideal form for philosophical purposes. Polis literally means city in Greek. It can also mean a body of citizens. In modern historiography, polis is normally used to indicate the ancient Greek city-states, like Classical Athens and its contemporaries, and is often translated as "city-state. importance of the year 508 BC to the ancient Greeks - Democracy is introduced in Athen

High school

Having two older brothers that went to the same high school that I did is a big advantage. They have told me how to get out of things, how to deal with each teacher, and the struggle it is to juggle sports and school. I realized that what they told me about that is very true, I'm experiencing it right now. Walking into John Carroll playing multiple school sports and a club sport I knew it was going to be challenging, but I didn't think it was going to be this difficult. I woke up at 6:15, went to school till 2:45 without any mods off, went straight to volleyball practice for three hours and stayed an extra twenty minutes back to have a meeting with the coaches, went to lacrosse workouts and training for two hours, got home around 8:45, ate serial as dinner, and am now completing my homework. I am emotionally, physically, and mentally drained and its only the second day of school. But here I am at nine, eating funions, drinking coffee, and watching That 70's Show (all amazin

First day

Kenzie Currey             My first day of school was not as bad as I thought it would have been. My least favorite class was probably spanish because the teacher only talked in spanish the whole time and i understood about half of what she said. I enjoyed most of my other classes but I think my favorite was english with Mr. Chalk. English is my favorite subject which is why I liked it the most, but Mr. Chalk just kind of reminded me of my brother at college so I guess that set off something in my head. The best part of my day was probably lunch because that's the only time I get to see my best friend, we don't have any off mods or periods together. Another good part of my day was when I got to my advisory because we got Dunkin Doughnuts and listened to music. I was also excited for the end of the day because I really like going to volleyball practices and games. And of course being in your class was a great part of my day! The worst part of my day was healthy class. This is b
