Situations

In class yesterday we learned about sites and how they are what geographers use to describe the location by the physical character of the place. But today we learned about a situation. A situation is a valuable way to indicate location for two reasons:
1.       Situation helps us to find an unfamiliar place by comparing its location with a familiar one
2.       Situation helps us understand the importance of a location… for example:
a.       Some places are important because they are accessible to other important location

During class you asked one of us where Bel air was. You kept asking and asking til someone said Baltimore, because everyone knows where it is. This is a great example of situation. This is because if someone asked where Bel Air was and they weren't from around here they wouldn't know where is was unless they were told a familiar place near by. The person wouldn't know where Bel Air or Harford County is so they would have to be told how far away Baltimore is from Bel Air.
