Sites

This blog may seem bad because I'm very bad at explaining what we learned in class today but I understand it. These are some of the notes I took:

  • KEY QUESTION: How do geographers describe where things are?
-Geographers can describe the location by site, which is the physical                                                       character of a place (climate, water sources, topography, soil vegetation,                                               latitude, and elevation)
  • Humans have the ability to modify the characteristics of a site
  • The southern portion of NYC Manhattan Island is twice as large today as it was in 1626
So what I learned in class today was that there is an upside and a down side to constructing a building of work/home in the city.

The upsides are:

  • Unemployed people looking for jobs can find a job there
  •  If the land that is being constructed on for an apartment building was corn fields owned by a farmer and they sold them the land, he/she would make 10x the money they would in years
  • The owners of the work/apartment building will be making plenty of money
The downsides are:

  • The land that is being constructed on may be forms of life like trees, flowers, animals, and habitats
  • The waste from all the bathrooms need a place to go
  • There may be families with multiple children living in the apartment building which means they would most likely need to live near a school and a grocery store
